White Cliffs of Dover - England Sub Heading
“The sea is calm tonight,
The tide is full, the moon lies fair
Upon the straits: – on the French coast, the light
Gleams, and is gone: the cliffs of England stand,
Glimmering and vast, out in the tranquil bay.”
English Poet Mathew Arnold – Dover Beach
I arrived at the city of Dover after traveling from Canterbury. I was already falling in love with the beautiful scenery that accompanied me as I traveled aboard the double-decker. One image that sticked with me was watching a pair of horses out in some land, as they ran playfully each in their Horse Blankets. A beautiful overcast sky was present throughout the day.
I arrived in Kent and walked to my Airbnb where I dropped off my backpack and started my journey towards the White Cliffs.
I was greeted by the sight of the Dover castle as I began my trek, It felt like I was transported towards 1900 century England, beautiful houses that were being overlooked by a huge castle in the distance. Only the vehicles on the side of the streets provided any sort of reference to reality. Magical
As I made my way on the Vera Lynn way I saw my first glimpse of the coastline. I was breathless, The pure blue ocean provided a drone that accompanied that awe-inspiring sight. I felt envy for the birds that could easily fly from peak to peak. I quickly made my way to a peak at one of the cliffs.
It was a strange feeling when I arrived.
I was over flooded by a cocktail of emotions. I imagined myself sharing this moment with a hypothetical significant other, this was accompanied by feelings of affection, love, and comfort. I then envisioned losing that person and coming back to the same spot and feeling the empty shallowness of grief and loss.
I do not know if this was just the romantic in me or the beauty of the sight that prompted these emotions, but I was a bit choked up and even teared up a bit on being on that big pile of chalk.
